Insights Into The Masterbatch Market

2024/11/21

Masterbatches are essential additives in plastic processing, playing a critical role in enhancing the color diversity, physical properties, and processing efficiency of plastic products. At last week's National Plastic Coloring and Masterbatch Academic and Trade Information Exchange Conference, the Masterbatch Specialty Committee provided an in-depth analysis of global and Chinese masterbatch markets, based on 2023 data. The report covered production and sales trends and offered forecasts for future development, aiming to guide industry participants in decision-making.

In 2023, global masterbatch production reached nearly 6.8 million tons, reflecting robust market demand. Geographically, 64% of production came from international markets, highlighting the high degree of globalization in masterbatch manufacturing. As a major global manufacturing hub, China contributed approximately 2.4 million tons, accounting for 18% of the global total. Among this, member companies of the Masterbatch Specialty Committee produced about 1.2 million tons, also representing 18% of the global share, underscoring China’s pivotal role in the masterbatch industry both domestically and internationally.

The global masterbatch market achieved sales revenue of ¥96.9 billion in 2023. International markets accounted for 60.9% of this revenue, slightly exceeding their production share, indicating higher value-added products in overseas markets. In contrast, China’s market (excluding committee members) recorded sales of ¥37.9 billion, representing 24.7% of the total and showcasing its immense consumption capacity and growth potential. Sales revenue from member companies of the committee reached ¥14 billion, securing a substantial share of the domestic market while contributing 14.4% to the global market, highlighting their competitive edge.

Future Market Outlook

The global masterbatch market is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.21%, reaching ¥124.1 billion by 2028. Growth in the Chinese market is particularly remarkable, with sales expected to increase from ¥36.01 billion to ¥48.4 billion, reflecting the ongoing expansion of China’s plastic industry and rising demand for high-quality masterbatches. Member companies of the Masterbatch Specialty Committee, whose combined sales currently account for 37% of the domestic market and 14.4% globally, are poised to play a vital role in driving industry upgrades and enhancing international competitiveness.

An analysis of 106 Chinese masterbatch companies surveyed by the committee revealed combined sales of 1.2 million tons and revenue of ¥14 billion. Among these, plastic masterbatches dominated with sales of 1.02 million tons and revenue of ¥10.8 billion, while fiber masterbatches accounted for 180,000 tons in sales and ¥3.2 billion in revenue. In terms of product types, black masterbatches ranked first in both production and sales, followed by white, colored, functional, and filled masterbatches, reflecting diverse market demands for various colors and functionalities.

The global masterbatch market is on a steady growth trajectory, with China playing an increasingly prominent role as a key participant and contributor. The Masterbatch Specialty Committee, as a hub for industry leaders, not only leads the domestic market but also exerts significant influence on the global stage. In the future, as the global plastics industry continues to evolve and demand grows for eco-friendly and high-performance materials, the masterbatch sector will face both opportunities and challenges.
